How to divert missed calls to another number in Australia
You don't have to give up your business number to have missed calls answered somewhere else. Conditional call divert (also called call forwarding) sends only the calls you don't answer to a second number, and leaves every call you do answer alone. Here's how to set it up on an Australian mobile.
Divert only the calls you miss
Mobile networks support three common kinds of divert. For a business, the first two are the useful ones, because calls you answer yourself are never touched.
- When unanswered: the call rings your phone first, and goes to the other number if you don't pick up.
- When busy: the call goes to the other number if you're already on a call.
- Divert all: every call goes to the other number straight away. Your phone doesn't ring. Use this only when you want it that way.
Using the keypad codes
These are standard GSM codes. Open your phone's dialler, type the code with the destination number in full (for example 04XX XXX XXX or +614XXXXXXXX), and press call. You should see a confirmation message.
**61*DESTINATION-NUMBER**30#**67*DESTINATION-NUMBER###002#Using your phone's settings instead
If you'd rather not type codes, search your phone's settings for call forwarding.
- Android: open the Phone app, then Settings, then Calls (or Supplementary services), then Call forwarding. Set the destination under When busy and When unanswered.
- iPhone: the built-in Call Forwarding setting forwards every call, not only the missed ones. To divert only missed calls, use the keypad codes above.
How long should it ring first?
The 30 in the unanswered code is the number of seconds your phone rings before the call moves on. Networks generally accept a limited range, so if a value is refused, try 25 or 20. Too short and you'll lose calls you would have answered. Too long and the caller may give up or hit your voicemail first.
Check that voicemail isn't catching the call first
If your voicemail picks up before the divert fires, the call never reaches the other number. Either turn voicemail off, or make sure the divert's ring time is shorter than your voicemail's. Make a test call from another phone, let it ring out, and confirm it lands where you expect.
Things that vary by carrier and plan
Codes and options can differ between networks, prepaid and postpaid plans, and business and consumer accounts, and diverting to another number can attract call charges depending on your plan. If a code doesn't work, check your carrier's call-forwarding help page or ask them. Always test with a real call.
Where Galdyr fits
If you divert unanswered and busy calls to a Galdyr number, an AI receptionist answers them, takes the caller's name, number, suburb and job details, and sends you the lead. When you sign up, your welcome email contains the exact codes for your own number, so there's nothing to look up or copy. It's $2.50 per captured lead with no subscription, and the first 3 leads are free.
Questions
Will callers know their call was diverted?
They hear a slightly longer ring while your phone tries first, then the call is answered by whatever you diverted to. They still dialled your normal number.
Does call divert cost money?
That depends on your carrier and plan. Some include it, and some charge for the diverted leg of the call. Check your plan or ask your carrier before relying on it.
How do I turn it off?
Dial ##002# and press call to cancel all diverts, or switch it off in your phone's call forwarding settings.
